 HISTORY •

A young man in his teens arrived at Ellis Island from Italy,

alone with very little money and the knowledge of cabinet making.

Like thousands of others, coming to America in the 1800’s

from all parts of Europe and speaking different languages was a tremendous task.

The uncertainties of survival alone was to be determined by those that had the vision

of what they could accomplish through hard work, a need to learn the English language

and to some, a desire to be self employed.

Verniere Loria had the desire and determination to become self employed.

In the late 1800’s with his knowledge of cabinet making he wanted to start his own business.

He believed that manufacturing pool tables could be more lucrative than making furniture

because pool rooms were making themselves a part of the

New York scene as a popular form of recreation.

In 1912 his dream came true when he opened shop in lower Manhattan called “V. Loria Pool Table Manufacturer.”

When his sons were introduced into the business, he moved to a new larger location on the

Bowery & Delancey Street with a sign that now proudly read “V. Loria & Sons” “Billiard Equipment”.

As the years passed, the pool rooms usually located in expansive store basements

or lofts were adjoined or replaced with bowling alleys.

In the early 1940’s bowling supplies were added to the billiard line

as bowling was quickly becoming a predominant sport. In the 1950’s.

V. Loria & Sons in NYC became a major supplier of bowling supplies, opening two bowling pro shops,

in 1957 Yonkers, NY and in 1959 Brooklyn, NY.

The Yonkers store, in 1959 a third generation son added trophies and awards to the business

to satisfy the need of the bowling leagues.

The trophy business created an opportunity to expand the awards business to include all sports,

corporate, religious and fraternal organizations.

As the trophy and awards business grew, in 1965 the company moved a few blocks to a larger location.

The billiard business began resurgence and even more space was needed.

In 1973 the company once again moved to its current location at 1876 Central Park Avenue in Yonkers NY.

The New York City store, a landmark location for over 80 years was closed in 1998.

The numerous bowling lanes throughout the tri state area were also closing their doors and,

as the bowling population diminished, bowling supplies were discontinued from the Loria product line.

The V. Loria & Sons name for Billiard and game room equipment and Loria Awards for trophies,

plaques and awards remain Loria’s major product lines.

From its humble beginning in 1912, the V. Loria & Sons name lives on in Yonkers, NY.

The Loria’s celebrate Over 100 years as an ongoing family business.

Today the fourth generation of Loria’s proudly continue the legacy of the young

immigrant who came to America with nothing more than a desire to succeed.

The Loria philosophy is straight forward “be the best at what you do, treat every customer with honesty,

courtesy & respect and offer the highest quality products at the fairest prices.”
